We are involved in both historic preservation and education. Although no Army service academy was established for the Confederacy, some colleges (such as The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute ) maintained cadet corps that trained Confederate military leadership. The barrels are marked "Ala." with the date and inspector’s mark. "This was the official carbine of the Confederate States, adopted by a board of cavalry officers in the field in 1864. Jackson, they emphasized, embodied southern religious values, and in his death he led the war dead as a “martyr” for the Lost Cause of the South.

This occurred in the month of September, 1863. The Civil War Research Database is a historic effort to compile and link all available records of common soldiers in the Civil War. He said few had ever been slaves, and that they appreciated the benefits of slavery. (Black slaveowners are the subject of Larry Koger's book, Black Slaveowners, Free Black Slave Masters in South Carolina, 1790-1860.) 1,500 men signed up to defend Louisiana on April 21, 1860, and the Daily Picayune asked "What will the Northerners have to say to this?"

When finally Shelby was promoted to the command of a division, Edwards shared the fortune of his generous and chivalrous leader and became the Adjutant of the division, I think with the rank of Colonel, though of this I have no positive evidence at hand. One result was publication of the symposium I’ll Take My Stand in 1930 by this reactionary group who became known as “Southern Agrarians” (King). He tried to control the experiment carefully, but after black troops fought heroically at the Battles of Port Hudson, Milliken's Bend, and Fort Wagner in 1863, he authorized a dramatic expansion of black enlistment.

He was very well known for leading daring raids and partisan ranger activities. There was some resistance to the Civil War by some of German descent in Texas. A major part of the reason for why tax revenue did not play as large a role for the Confederacy as it did for the Union was the individual states' opposition to a strong central government and the belief in states' rights which precluded giving too much taxing power to the government in Richmond.
