Thucydides' account of it was so detailed that some historians speculate he may have gained insights from reading contemporary medical writings, though no extant writings discussed epidemics. Similar stories appear to be unfolding in the energy industry as it responds to the Earth’s limited supply of petroleum and natural gas. Estimates of N2 fixation indicate that approximately half of global N2 fixation occurs in the sea.

Finally, the idea of purification is a key aspect of all ritual activity in Shinto. In the light of this model, our original sin is not that we fell from some primordial perfection in the past but that we have at every stage failed to actualize the potentialities for enjoyment, goodness, justice, and love that were given in each situation. I expect my students to develop a broad perspective on ecology and evolution, to engage in research rooted solidly in empiricism but with an eye toward its wider theoretical and practical implications, and to maintain a healthy knowledge of natural history.

Wordsworth, however, sees this link in much more psychological terms than Shelley: "To unorganic natures I transferred / My own enjoyments, or, the power of truth / Coming in revelation, I conversed / With things that really are" (1805, II, 410-13).
